To get a clear bird's eye view of the earth's current state, we had to go from website to website collecting weather information. The weather is referred to as a set of all extant phenomena in a given atmosphere at a given time. It also includes interactions with the hydrosphere. The term weather usually refers to the activity of these phenomena over short periods (hours or days), as opposed to the term climate, which refers to the average atmospheric conditions over longer periods of time. Our weather links monitors earth's common phenomena include such things as wind, cloud, rain, snow, fog and dust storms. Less common events include natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes and ice storms. Almost all the weather phenomena occurs in the troposphere that isthe lower part of the atmosphere. Weather is the fundamental process that shapes the Earth. The process of weathering is constantly breaking down rocks and soils into smaller fragments and then into their constituent substances. These start some chemical reactions that can affect the surface further, or are reformed into other rocks and soils. The climate is a chaotic system, so small changes to one part of the system can have large effects on the system as a whole. This makes it difficult to forcast weather more than a few days in advance, though weather forecasters and technology are continually working to extend this limit through the scientific study of meteorology. It is impossible to make predictions more than two weeks in advance, limiting the potential for improved long term prediction skill. Chaos theory states that the slightest variation in the motion of the ground can grow with time. This idea is called the butterfly effect, from the idea that the motions caused by the flapping wings of a butterfly eventually could produce marked changes in the the atmosphere. Because of this chaos theory, we will never make perfect forecasts predictions, although there is allot of room for improvement. Weather
Forecasting refers mostly to a two-day
weather forecast. The
information consist mostly of temperature readings for the daytime high, and night time low.
Other more specific forecast will include marine information as tides, wind and
sea conditions. Today, weather forecasts are made by collecting digital data that describe the current state of some of the atmosphere most relevant elements like temperature, humidity and wind. By using software capable of calculating huge amounts of physically-based mathematical models, they can determine how the atmosphere is expected to change in the future. The chaotic nature of our atmosphere will certainly guarantee that we will never achieve a perfect forecast. It is just impossible to achieve a perfect forcast. |
